The Setting

Shinkou Ookami is set in a world where myth and fantasy are everyday normality. Wolf populations and wild herding animals outnumber most other creatures and humans lack the technology or numbers to be of any threat.

As well as the fantastic creatures of fantasy that populate the lands, there are creatures known as spirits. In this world, spirits are the reason magic exists. They are not living creatures nor are they dead, but they can think and feel just as any other being. No one has ever found a way to communicate with them because they do not speak in the same way and language as any other creature. Their telepathic ways of communication can only be heard by very few individuals that the wolves call Sho-un.

The technology of Shinkou is almost non-existent. Aside from the magical elements of lightning, there is no electricity. This means there are no cars, planes, trains, tvs, phones, radios, etc. Humans can occasionally be seen traveling with guns, but they are very crude and early inventions of them. In comparison with our real life time line, they would date back to before the 1500s.

The Story of the Land

Shinkou is the name of a land rich in magic and fantastic creatures. While humans and creatures alike think it to be a myth, some know that it does exist and believe it to be the birth place of all magic in the world. Spirits, said to be entities made up of pure energy, live scattered throughout this world, but these are not lingering souls of the dead or phantoms of passed ancestors. (You can learn more about spirits by following this link.) While spirits can be found in numerous lands across the globe, the greatest number of spirits make their home within the lands of Shinkou. Some believe the spirits like to linger in Shinkou because the land itself is so abundant with magic, though many think they prefer to live on Shinkou because this is where they are born, as the story goes.

Mizu Lake

One of the most magical areas within Shinkou, Mizu lake is a vast body of water that stretches on for miles. It is the most famous area of Shinkou because this is where, it is said, the spirits themselves are born. Every so often Mizu will put on a mystical display within its waters and from the depths of the lake, spirits will come forth and linger along the shoreline. The spirits that arrive are often smaller than most, which is why it is thought that these baby spirits are born from Mizu Lake in Shinkou.

While spirits are not the land itself, they are important to Shinkou's history and so, to understand the story of the land, one must know the story of the spirits. Every spirit can use magic and all spirits can only use a single type of magic, one that relates to the element that they represent: Fire spirits can use fire magic, earth spirits use earth magic and so on. Normally spirits are neutral in their beliefs and actions, but it has been noticed before that the type of creatures and beasts that live on the lands of Shinkou can turn the tide in Mizu's creation of chaotic or good-natured spirits. Dark entities like poltergeists and demons cause more devilish spirits to be born, while good-natured creatures like celestials create kind spirits. A balance of the two or neutral beasts like wolves, deer and other critters will cause spirits with neutral attitudes to be born.

It was for this reason the wolves were drawn to Shinkou.

War of the Wolves

Druins are legendary creatures that resemble both wolves and dragons, but because they appear more canine than dragon, they are thought of as a unique type of wolf breed. Druins are not natural creatures though, for they were created by demons to serve as fighters and vassals. Some decades ago, one druin in the service of demons could no longer take the abuse of his masters and led his kind against those who had created them, fighting long and bloody battles that eventually freed his race from servitude. This druin was called Tartarus and after winning freedom for his kin, they banded together and formed a wolf pack of Druins, electing Tartarus as their leader and making their home on the territory of Shinkou. At the time there were no other wolf packs or demons in the area and the land was plentiful and inviting to the freed Druins.

While the druins themselves were not evil, it was still a fact that they had been created by the dark magic of demons and eventually other creatures of similar energies were drawn to them. Unknowingly, the druins were attracting lesser demons and beastly creatures into the territory of Shinkou. Eventually, when the magic of the land became corrupt as more demons arrived, the only spirits to come forth from Mizu were chaotic and destructive. Shinkou became a cursed land of evil spirits and the rest of the world was thrown into turmoil. As the darker spirits left the land of Shinkou, they would venture out into the world and wreak havoc by devouring other spirits and creatures, changing climate zones and throwing entire ecosystems off balance.

While no creature or living thing was safe from the chaos, wolves were the first to respond to this upset of nature. All creatures know the story of Shinkou, whether they believed it was true or not, but how else were they to explain the disasters happening in their homelands? In order to put a stop to it, several different wolf packs from all across the lands made the long journey to Shinkou, determined to return things to the way they were before the dark spirits had become so dangerous.

Druins may be uncommon creatures, but they are widely known as servants of demons and ghouls, even though it is not often by choice that they serve. Believing that the Druins were the cause of the land's corruption and all the dark spirits coming out of Mizu, the newly arrived wolves tried to force the pack to leave. Having grown attached to their new found home and freedom, the druins, being unaware that they were the reason demons and other dark entities kept appearing on Shinkou, refused to leave their territory.

As with all wars, each side has their own reasoning and stories. In Shinkou, either one blames the other and no one is entirely sure as to who made the first move, but it did not take long for battle to erupt between the druin pack and wolf packs. Those packs that had traveled to Shinkou allied themselves against their new, common enemy, but it was not without conflict. Even when fighting against the Druins, brawls would break out between packs and there was confusion concerning the packs' leaders. With all of these different alphas in one place, it was not exactly clear who anyone should answer to; most wolves were torn between loyalty to their own alpha and obedience to another. To counter this situation, the alphas formed a council and though it was not a quick or easy decision, an alpha pair was eventually chosen to act as the highest leaders for all of the packs. With a single alpha pair and a council of leaders to direct them, the once separate packs merged and began acting as a whole.

As the elders like to tell their pups, after nearly ten years of fighting, the druins were finally pushed out of Shinkou by the brave efforts of the pack. Both sides had been devastated, but the druins in the end could stand no more. Not wanting to leave the land they had won, for the loved ones they lost and the fear that the druins may reclaim and re-taint the land, the wolves remained in Shinkou and made it their own territory. In honor of the lands they had protected, this single pack became known as the Shinkou Wolves, while the druins were given the name of Giaku.
