Golden Eyes and Silver Skies « Thread Started on Jun 1, 2010, 1:09pm »
Bryn shoved his way through brush and leaves, his muscles pumping as he ran at a swift pace. Heart rate steady, his paws barely struck ground hard enough to make a sound. Though his body was large, tall as it was broad, toned muscles allowed for swift changes in direction without much resistance as he dodged through trees on his way out of the wood. However, he knew, as silent as he ran he could not go unseen. What little sun there was on that day, reflected off of his pelt, highlighting the white undercoat and accenting the light silver dusting over the top and sides of his body. Of course, this did not matter to him; hiding was not his goal here. Almond-shaped, golden orbs scanned the wide expanse of land as he gently slowed his pace to a steady lope. He searched over rocks and hills, following the wind so his nares could catch any scent of one upwind from him. He spotted a certain hill not far away and moved toward it, ears rotating to listen around him. As he neared the crest of the slope, he slowed further still and scanned again until finally coming to the conclusion that he appeared to still be alone. He breathed in deeply as his eyes moved to the cloudy skies to watch the grey clouds swarming and let his breath out in a huff. He could tell by the scent of the air that it would not yet rain, but it was a possibility. Funny though, that the sky seemed to match his mood. Standing at the top of the hill, he let his hindquarters drop to the earth to rest, tail curling around one side. He let the talons of his front paws lightly dig past the blades of grass and into the dirt. He was tired.. Not physically, although he had traveled far, but mentally. He had gone far too long without the company of another, and it'd left him too long on his own for his mind to work. He loved his life as a wanderer, exploring new places, smelling new scents, hearing new sounds... But he needed a break. His heart was large, but empty, leaving plenty of room for loneliness. Usually it did not bother him, but it did this day. Tilting his head back, ears lying flat, he took in another huge breath and let it out in a long, mournful song to tell of his lonesome plight. Many a night, he sang to the sky, very much accustomed to the deep silence that always followed. He only hoped he would be heard this time...

Swift paws bounded across the earth, carrying a slim femme with haste. Her lanky muscles rippled subtly beneath her coat, the purest of white. Her mind was racing as she absorbed the sites and smells and sounds of the surrounding area. She was easily excited by new things, and the sensations put her in a euphoric state. Two ears perked daintily upon her head as she slowed to a trot, the wind carrying the scent of a male down a hill. She pinned her ears, wary. She was a young, pretty girl wandering the Outlands by herself. A male, if large enough, could overpower her. Yet.... this was a foreign scent to her, which piqued her curiosity.
She slowed again, this time to a halt. She lifted her maw towards the wind and inhaled deeply, processing all the things she was smelling. He must have been a wanderer, for there were several different aromas that wafted from his fur. Before she could assess it further, a lonely howl pierced the silence, causing her hackles to rise instinctively. The howl was not angry, nor happy... yet, it wasn't sad, either. It was more of a melancholy, and it clenched her heart firmly. Forgetting the danger that meeting a male in seclusion posed, she started up the hill.

Bryn remained in an upright, sitting position, his broad head tilted slightly downward. He sat so still he appeared statuesque, only animated occasionally when a soft breeze would cause his silver pelt to ripple and flow. Sunkissed visuals stared almost blankly at the clouds overhead as the wheels in his mind turned round and round. Sometimes he wondered why he had to be the way he was; an explorer of sorts. He just had to go and roam the earth. There was something about all that wilderness that just.. pulled him. And he was weak to it, like water. A strong current that swept him clear off his feet and down the unforgiving river so that it was all but useless to resist. And what had it cost him? His family. He tried hard to think about them and how he should miss them, but it was difficult because he'd had no real connection to them. All he missed was the company. Without them, he lacked proper social skills learned to all juvenile wolves. Sure he had some battle training and certain playfulness from bein a pup, but it wasn't the same. Everywhere he had been upon being banned from his pack, and everyone he had met along the way, he hadn't known how to properly communicate. Of course, he picked up a few things, but it was still difficult for him. It didn't help that he had no real hope of joining another pack. Bryn simply did not respond well to authority, especially when it had come to his father. He tried, but he considered himself doomed to ever be the wanderer, unable to linger in one place for too long due to the inability to remain comfortable enough to settle. But hey, who knew? Maybe that would change this time.
Shaking out of his heavy thoughts, Bryn's sensitive audits picked up the sound of grass whispering under light paws and his head whipped around. Wow, there was a wolf almost right on his ass and he had barely noticed. He really needed to cut out on the daydreams. Windows caught the sun's glare, making the gold in them glitter gently as he quickly took in the newcomer. His was a polite size-up, only peering at who and what the stranger was. Quick observation told him that she was a lone femme, and curious from the looks of it. Bryn tilted his head slightly, sniffing to verify. As if he really needed to. Upon looking at her, she was brilliant. Brightly blank fur covered a lithe frame, substantially smaller than his broad and muscular form. He stood after a moment, turning to face her fully before remembering his heavy stature and sitting again so as to appear less imposing. The corners of his jowls lifted just a bit as he continued to watch her, audits perked forward in his own curiosity. He was still surprised someone paid heed to his call. Once again, though, he felt the block that his lack of social skills left on him as he sat there, just looking at her. After a moment, he dipped his head to her in greeting; at a total loss for words, and watched her with an almost puppy-ish expression on his normally carefully blank facade.

As she neared the top of the hill, Kerri's imagination ran wild. The smells that floated down with the breeze were exotic to her delicate nose, so she began to wonder about all the places this male had been. Perhaps he had explored the forest, with all it's brilliant tree-tops. Maybe he even jumped from one limb to the next, hunting colorful birds. Or perhaps he had been to beautiful beaches, splayed with white sand and water that took the hue of a brilliant turquoise as he hunted fish as large as he.
Could he have seen caves as intricate as honeycombs? The blackest of the darkness existed within. Had he ran from the bats, nipping at his hide? Had he plunged from a mountaintop? Oh, how she wished to experience such things! But she had not mustered the nerve to explore beyond the humble Outlands. Curious as she was, she was restricted by her knowledge that she was quite clumsy, and tended to immerse herself in less-than-favorable situations. Alas, she had the intelligence of an old, wise wolf. But her thought patterns could be scattered at times, and she was easily overwhelmed. Meeting one new male was completely different than climbing a mountain or having a randevouz with savages.
Kerri snapped back to reality just as she neared the top. It seemed the brute has just noticed her, as well. She halted for a moment to watch him. This required caution, for she was in no hurry to be beaten or violated. The white wolfess began to gauge him carefully as he sat. Luckily, this eased her worry. Most wolves would never sit in the presence of a female if they harbored ill-will.
However, he simply stared at her..... this miffed her a bit, but she attempted to shrug it off. Perhaps it had been a while since he had seen a female? The fact that it could pose danger escaped her thoughts though. Once he dipped his head in greeting, she smiled a bit and took a few more steps towards him, stopping only when she was about five feet away from him. She sat and dipped her head as well.
"Hello.... my name is Kerri."
Her voice flowed smoothly with confidence, and just a hint of excitement. Smooth like honey, and soft like velvet, she continued to introduce herself.
"A moment ago I heard your call... are you feeling quite alright?"
If one had acute hearing, they might pick up on a slight accent. It could be likened to Russian, but it had (for the most part) disappeared as she grew. Her pack carried this accent, but once they were gone she had learned to further communicate from random encounters with other wolven.

An almost amused expression flashed across the wolf's features as Bryn studied this new female. It was his way; to observe and wait before acting or speaking. He noticed a certain spark in her eyes as she watched him as well, noting too how tense she seemed at first. As if he would spring and attack her at any second and she had to be ready. A muscle twitched in his muzzle as he briefly countered a blooming smile. He had to give her kudos for her caution. He was a large male, standing at maximum height for a male wolf and well-proportioned, and she didn't know him. He could have easily taken advantage of her if he had felt the desire for such a thing. However, of all the things that Bryn was, he was not an abuser. No one was above or below him in his eyes, therefore sharing equity in stature. He knew very well that not all wolves thought in this way, and he knew about hierarchies. He simply chose not to abide by those same rules.
After a moment, Bryn noticed also that the fae before him seemed to relax a bit more when she saw him remain seated. He smiled at this, wanting her to be aware that he meant her no harm. He would gladly stand and fight or defend himself should the need arise, but he would never attack a female without a just reason. He shook his head lightly, avoiding slipping into another deep thought as he watched her finally approach further before setting down nearby. He smiled lightly back at her in return for the one she had given, hiding the fact that he was struggling to figure out what to say or do at present. And when she spoke, at first it put him even more at a loss. Her smooth tones washed over him with the breeze, soft and almost musical notes gentle on his hearing. He inhaled her scent once more, taking in her loveliness. Yes, it had been a very long time indeed since he had encountered a female, let alone any other wolves, but he tried to focus. If he messed this up again, he knew he'd really be lost.
"Kerri.."
The word, her name, was whispered as he repeated it. Such a simplistic name, and yet he still found it lovely. He found himself smiling again as he listened to her continue to speak. Taking comfort in her confidence, Bryn took a breath and attempted to let it rub off on him. He thought he'd go with sheer honesty.
"Yes, I'm fine, of course. You'll have to excuse me if I seem a little off-putting. You see, it is not often I come across many wolves, and I do not always know what to say or do."
At the end of his statement, he looked off to the side with a frown, put off at himself for his incompetence. He shook it off, though, and his golden gaze returned to her. He did indeed notice that odd little lilt to her voice, but he found it intriguing and it left him wanting to hear more from her. He tilted his head once more, wondering at her. She seemed to be a wanderer like him, though she did not carry many scents about her. Perhaps he was invading her home. He continued to ponder a bit more before realizing that he very rudely left out his own introduction. Failing again.
"My name is Bryn. It is nice to hear another voice besides that of the forest animals and birds."
He added a soft chuckle following his words, attempting to lighten the situation and make up for his rudeness. His smile remained as well as he sat with his every attention still on her. Every so often his digits would rotate, picking up noises from all directions; Bryn couldn't let anyone else sneak up on him.

Kerri waited patiently for him to respond, her ears instantly perking when he spoke her name. She nodded, confirming that it was, indeed, her. He seemed a little lost, but she was ever the patient and caring being. She chose to sit quietly as he gathered his thoughts, giving him the opportunity to put a sentence together.
"Yes, I'm fine, of course. You'll have to excuse me if I seem a little off-putting. You see, it is not often I come across many wolves, and I do not always know what to say or do."
The white wolfess nodded again, wondering if he would tell her what name he went by. When he looked to the side, she took this opportunity to get a better look. Her crystal-blue orbs roamed his features until he looked at her again. Her eyes snapped back to his own golden ones, and she gave no hint as to what she was thinking.
Secretly, she was still wondering about all the places he had traveled, as well as whom he had accompanied. However, these questions would wait.
She arose from her thoughts as he spoke once more, this time introducing himself properly.
Bryn.
What a lovely name, she thought. He continued to speak of the pleasure of meeting another.
"Hello, Bryn. I thought you might be an adventurer."
Kerri smiled again, slightly distracted by the way his ears were twitching to and fro. Because of this, her eyes flashed to his ears every few words.
"I'm so happy I can accompany you, then. It can get very lonely around here."
She paused for a moment, deciding she should reassure him.
"And don't worry about formalities. I set no precedence or expectations on those that I meet. Simply do as you please, as long as you don't offend."
She tilted her head to the side, sincerity practically flowing from her body. She liked the fact that he was honest and forthcoming, even if he struggled with socializing. She had been in his shoes, once. So she understood how it felt to be unable to portray yourself in a good light when you could hardly muster an introduction.

Golden orbs studied the blanched femme for a moment, quickly noticing her look of understanding. As she spoke, his audits would cease their rotations to pin point on her, focusing only on her words. He smiled, thinking how interesting and amusing it was that he actually needed her reassurance. Like he was a lost little pup with not a clue about the wonders of the world. And yet he had been everywhere- or at least it felt like he had. Bryn gave a soft sigh, standing to stretch his long legs and broad back. As he did so he felt the oh-so-familiar soreness in his muscles from long treks with little rest, and savored the relieving feeling of stretching them out. The aches never quite went away, but to him they weren't so unpleasant. It was a reminder of who and what he was, as if he would or could ever forget. And as he stretched out his forelimbs, he felt it. A rather odd twinge in his right shoulder that was reminiscient of skin tearing. His scar. Stretching always seemed to make it itch like it hadn't been there for the better part of his life. With a light grunt he sat again, lifting a rear paw to scratch at the not-as-pleasant reminder of his past. He wished the fur would have grown back over the deep abrasions in his skin, but he hadn't been so lucky. Oh well, thought Bryn, at least I'm alive. Once his itch had diminished, Bryn's piercing golden stare returned to his present companion and a slight smile returned to his maw. As he began to speak, he noted to himself how much easier it was to form a sentence this time.
"Thank you for understanding, Kerri, and I mean well never to offend another until the situation may call for it." He paused only a moment. "And I do not see that happening at present."
His smile widened as he recalled her statement about his social standing and about how she apparently felt lonely from time to time.. Well hell.. He could definitely relate to that one.
"I'm glad you answered my call as well. Indeed I am an adventurer and, as is the life of a wanderer, I know much about the occasional empty feeling of walking alone."
His words, though spoken with a smile, carried the deep undercurrent of truth behind them. Bryn did in fact love his life as a wanderer; from the constant change of scenery to the steady flow of new scents and sounds, but he did occasionally feel the need for a different kind of change. Bryn flicked his ears toward the sudden sound of very distant thunder and gazed for a moment to the skies off to his left before it returned once more to her, all too curious as to where their conversation would lead next.

((OCC: I hope no one minds me joining in so late.))
A white wolf with strange markings on her leg and chest stopped suddenly at the sound of an almost mournful howl. She pricked her ears at the sound of it, zeroing in on the location. "Darklight?" She whispered to the muscled grey wolf beside her. Her voice soft and gentle, as i always was.
Darklight, too, heard the lonesome howl. She straitened herself and watched her sister. Without turning she called to her, a question in her single word. She smirked as only a wolf can. "I think we should go and see who cries out so."
Ea turned to her sister now. "You sure?" Her bi-colored eyes searching her sisters dark golden ones. She found whatever it was she was looking for, and smiled. "Alright then. Shall we answer, or just show up?"
She thought a moment. "I say we go on until we catch the scent, find out how many, then make our reply." Her Ea nodded, agreeing to the idea after a moment of thought. Simultaneously, the two stepped forward, and continued on. This time, toward the source of the call.
After some time, Ea lifted her head and scented the air. As luck would have it, they were down wind of what ever lay ahead. She caught the scent of two individual. She swiveled her ears, searching for the sounds of speech. "There are two wolves. One male, the other female. They're talking about something, but I can't make it out this far away"
Darklight, too, took a whiff it the air and turned her ears every which way. She could smell them, but could not hear them as well as her sister. "Well then, lets see if they will accept our company."
Ea smiled. She loved howling. It was the most primitive and purest way a wolf could express itself. She raised her to the sky, closed her eyes, at let out a beautiful howl. It raised and lowered in pitch, flowing into a seeming endless melody.
Throwing her head back, Darklight joined in on the singing. Her voice was not as beautiful as Ea's, but it was stronger. Through their howls, they sent their message of peace, asking if their company would be accepted.

Kerri felt slightly bashful, being so open with someone she hardly knew. Yet, she felt at ease beside this male. He was obviously kind at heart and his manners were certainly acceptable despite his lack of socialization.
She tilted her head to the left as she watched Bryn stretch, unsure if he would answer her. But before she could think further, her pristine ears swiveled, revealing a disturbance. Her expression became cross. She could have sworn that she heard footsteps approaching, but she couldn't smell anyone.
"That's correct, I'm on the hill now. I can't smell anyone, just like Bryn was unable to catch my scent.'
Kerri turned towards the slope, trying to look downhill. The approaching storm, however, made it difficult to spot them. The wolfess sighed, frustrated. Her inability to see or smell whatever was nearing made her feel vulnerable. She backed up next to Bryn, suddenly noticing that he was speaking to her.
She turned to look at him and smiled.
"Neither do I, and I'll do my best not to offend either. And yes, wandering is quite lonely at times. But it seems there may be oth-..."
Kerri was cut off by two simultaneous howls. She narrowed her eyes and sat beside him, as his equal. She felt less vulnerable with Bryn by her side.
"May be others like us approaching."
She turned to him, a questioning look in her eyes. The howls called for permission, but would they accept? The vocals were obviously feminine, and did not hold any semblance of threat, but the idea of two more wolves made her uneasy. One vocal was much more pronounced than the other, which led Kerri to believe that at least one of them could possibly be bigger than her.
Would they mistake her for Bryn's mate, and attack? Kerri had learned a lot about normal socialization, but she was clueless as to the rules of courtship. No, she and Bryn were not 'together', but if they were mistaken for a couple she had no clue how the others might react.. or how she should act accordingly.
Once again, her crystal blues floated over to the male beside her.

Bryn faintly noticed as he awaited his companion's response, how calm she was becoming of his presense. He gave an inward smile at this, for maybe he was not doomed to a life of complete solitude. Of course, he did not expect he was totally incapable, or at least.. He didn't expect he would be forever incapable of socialization. He just needed a little- oh what to call it?- practice..
But just then, it seemed that whatever power above deemed it necessary to bombard him with company. His broad, silver facade instantly turned in the direction of the howls, his golden eyes searching. This was the reason he chose the hilltop for this acquaintance; he might not be able to smell all around him, but he could at least hear or see. He was fortunate to have a great sense of sight and momentarily spotted something white in the distance, but it was growing darker overhead. Another clap of thunder sounded, louder this time, and his audits went back for a moment. Hackles raised slightly when he could not scent them. Bryn had only heard two howls simultaneously, but this did not mean there could not be others. He briefly contemplated responding, when Kerri spoke again.
"Yes it would seem so."
His tone was slightly sarcastic, since it was obvious now that her statement rang true, but he did not let it take on a rude effect, smiling slightly. But his hackles did not lower, especially when she sided up next to him. It oddly warmed him that she would take comfort in him when he was but a stranger to her, but it only made him feel protective now. He took a moment to observe, watching for further movement where he had seen the flash of white, auds perked up straight and remaining alert. The howls had seemed friendly enough, only inquiring as to whether or not they would welcome them. And after a moment of thought, instinct led him to believe they were only two femmes who were responding to his earlier howl.
He glanced at Kerri, noticing her own tension, and slowly his hackles smoothed down over his neck and back. At her question he met her eyes, wondering at her own discomfort, then a moment later he rose. New confidence bled from him when he stood to his full four feet. "Let them come." He spoke this calmly, his orbs returning to the spot in the distance, resuming watch. If anything, if they brought more with them and decided to start a problem, he was sure he could protect her. A few deep breaths and then he lifted his maw, letting loose a low howl meant to reassure, but with a light undercurrent of warning; They wouldn't attack them unless they did first. Then he waited.

Her ears were pricked in anticipation. Would they respond? Would the response be favorable? An ominous shot of thunder rang in the not-so-far distance. There was more water in the air than usual. A storm was close. How far it was, however, was a matter of guessing. The storms here were different from the ones in the Northern Lands. She was not used to the pattern here yet. Will they ever respond?
The silence after their call lengthened. Ea was getting a bit anxious, that much Darklight could see. Her ears were erect, alert and waiting. Just as it seemed the silence was lengthening far longer than it should, an answering howl could be heard up ahead. It was a male who responded. She didn't like that too much. The idea of the male responding, regardless of the tone, unsettled her a bit.
Finally there was a reply. The male of the duo had called back, accepting their offer to join them. Ea smiled warmly, though her sister seemed a bit tense. She knew it was because it was a male who had answered. "Darklight, it'll be ok." She nudged her sisters shoulder reassuringly.
Ea nudged her. It'll be ok...Darklight sighed, but kept her guard up. "Well, lets not keep them waiting." She trudged along, her sister beside her.
After a few yards, they broke the tree line, and upon the hill before them, sat the two strange wolves. She lowered her head a bit. The motion was not submissive, but not exactly aggressive.
As the walked, the gem around her neck swayed. Had the sun been out, it would have caught the light in an interesting way. As they broke the tree line, two wolves atop a hill came into view. The two sister walked toward the two, but stopped a few yards away. Ea called out. "Good day to you two."

Kerri watched as Bryn lowered his hackles, wondering if he was calming down. She nodded as he spoke, then howled to the other wolves. No matter how calm he may feel, though, the white wolfess remained on edge.
The padded steps grew closer every second until two other females came into view. Kerri straightened up, looking directly at the two. She attempted to pull back her lips in a half-smile as one called out to them with greetings. Her long, full tail swept the ground from side to side.
Her posture was not to command respect as an Alpha, but it did hint that she was to be taken seriously. She felt slightly better after noticing the other female had lowered her head slightly. With this, Kerri relaxed.
Turning to Bryn, she looked at his face. He seemed to be focusing on something. Perhaps the thought of protecting her? The idea made a spark of electricity shoot through her spine. It took her by surprise, but her outer appearance gave way to nothing.
Thunder sounded once again, bringing her back to the matter at hand.
"Good day."
She replied, standing in formality. Her crystal blues swept over the two newcomers. One made her feel uneasy, while the other made her feel cautious but not threatened. Kerri had never gotten along well with females, mostly due to her beauty, but it was never for lack of effort.
"May I inquire of your mission?"
Kerri paused for moment, wanting to say more. But she was distracted by her choice of words. Was she clear? Sometimes the way she asked things were interpreted wrong. For a split second, her ears lay flat against her head in worry. However, she caught herself just in time and straightened them again, trying to focus on both the newcomers and the storm at the same time.

Bryn listened intently, watching with ears at attention, until the two females came into view. He momentarily noticed his companion's change in posture and wondered at his own. He chose to remain standing, his body at ease, but his head held just above his shoulder height. A natural sense of pride always encompassed the silvery male where ever he went, and so he usually carried his head high. From what he'd learned, most took this as a challenge to whoever's authority, although Bryn had little interest in such matters. Here, they were no pack, thus there was no leader and no authority. Just the way he liked it. As soon as the newcomers came to rest at a position nearby, he turned his head to allow his piercing golden gaze to meet her crystalline one. His expression turned reassuring before he let it tighten again as he looked back at the minxes and then slowly began descending their hill. He remained careful to keep a respectful distance from them, but he moved so that he could scent them and be sure that it was just them. He had been ambushed in this way before. Once he was certain, he sat, large silver tail curling around one side of his haunches.
"Indeed it is.. Despite the incoming storm."
The massive brute glanced skyward just as lightning flashed across the horizon, somewhat close, followed by a louder clap of thunder. Bryn was unconcerned. This storm seemed to be just for show at present. Lifting his nose high, he sniffed for a moment. He loved everything about storms and he took care to know much about them along his journeys. The air at the moment was humid, but rain had a certain scent, and this was not it. Not yet. He glanced back up at Kerri where he left her, much more relaxed now, before looking back at their new acquaintances. She had asked them a question, and now he would remain silent while awaiting their response. Perhaps there was no ambush, but were they here only in response to his earlier expression of his longing for company? Time would tell, it would seem.

Ea noted the other females stance. She held herself high, as if she, were in a position of power. Well, she was too. She adjusted her position a bit, holding herself as an alpha female should. The other female spoke, asking them a question. Their mission? An interesting choice of words, but she understood her meaning. "We are simply traveling at the moment. No mission as of yet."
The male began his approach toward them. From her position just behind Ea, she lowered her head and narrowed her eyes. She didn't trust this male, and his coming closer to scent them. She could feel a growl of warning building in her throat. She stepped forward a bit. She defiantly would not allow this male near her pack leader...her sister.
Ea saw Darklight's reaction to the males approach. "Darklight." Was her whispered chastisement. Now was not the time to give bad impressions.
